Chef José Andrés on Washington, D.C.

Image
Beloved celebrity chef José Andrés publicly embarrasses Donald Trump by exposing his absurd lie that D.C. restaurants are being closed due to an imaginary crime wave. He really didn’t pull any punches here… “Mr. President @realdonaldtrump I understand why you are confused,” Andres wrote on X. “All your time in DC you haven’t eaten ONCE outside the White House or your own hotel. I’ve lived here for 33 years, and it’s a flat out lie that half the restaurants have closed because of safety,” he went on. “But restaurants will close because you have troops with guns and federal agents harassing people...making people afraid to go out,” Andrés added. Trump previously claimed that "half the restaurants" in the city are "closed" because "nobody could go, because they were afraid to go outside." He used the flagrant fabrication to support his deployment of the National Guard to the city. "Now those restaurants are opening and new restaurants are ope...

Illiberal Democracies

Illiberal Democracies   Definition and Origins   An illiberal democracy is a governing system that maintains the formal structures of elections and representative institutions while eroding or bypassing the substantive protections of individual rights and checks on power. It “hides its nondemocratic practices behind formally democratic institutions and procedures,” presenting itself as democratic while limiting genuine pluralism and civil liberties. This is supported by a one party state.   Key Characteristics    Illiberal democracies share several defining traits that distinguish them from fully liberal systems:    Concentration of power in the executive branch, often through weakened legislative or judicial oversight    Restrictions on press freedom, with censorship or state influence over major media outlets    Manipulation of electoral processes, including gerrymandering, patron...

TheoBros

Theobros: A Cultural and Ideological Snapshot The term “theobros” is a portmanteau of “theology” and “bro,” used to describe a subset of predominantly male, online Christian commentators who blend conservative theology with assertive, often combative, social media engagement. While not a formal movement, theobros have become a recognizable cultural phenomenon, particularly within evangelical and Reformed Christian circles. Core Characteristics and Beliefs Doctrinal Rigidity : Theobros typically espouse strict adherence to confessional Reformed theology, often emphasizing doctrines like penal substitutionary atonement, complementarianism, and biblical inerrancy. Masculine Identity : Many theobros promote a vision of masculinity rooted in patriarchal authority, spiritual leadership, and resistance to what they perceive as “feminized” or “soft” Christianity. Cultural Engagement : They are vocal critics of progressive Christianity, secul...

Education Is Inquiry. Inquiry Is Speech. Speech Is Freedom

8-15-25 Education Is Inquiry. Inquiry Is Speech. Speech Is Freedom. Education as Inquiry Education begins not with answers but with questions. At its heart, education is the art of inquiry: a deliberate process of curiosity, exploration, and critical thinking. When learners encounter a new concept in science, history, or art—they are invited to ask why, how, and what if. That active engagement transforms passive instruction into a dynamic exchange, where understanding grows through investigation rather than rote memorization. Inquiry-driven classrooms cultivate resilience in the face of uncertainty, teaching students to embrace complexity and to view each challenge as an opportunity for discovery. Inquiry also extends beyond formal lessons. Lifelong learners carry a spirit of investigation into every aspect of life, questioning social norms, probing ethical dilemmas, and scrutinizing the sources that shape their beliefs. When education fosters independent inquiry, it equip...

Legal Authority for Deploying the D.C. National Guard

Legal Authority for Deploying the D.C. National Guard     Washington, D.C. is uniquely structured: it has neither a governor nor a state legislature. Under federal law, the president exercises direct control over both the D.C. National Guard and, in emergencies, the city’s police force. That framework makes deploying Guard troops in the District legal when done under specific statutes.   Presidential Control of the D.C. National Guard   Unlike the National Guard in any of the 50 states, which governors command unless federalized, the D.C. Guard answers only to the president.   The president may activate D.C. Guard members “in such numbers as he deems necessary” to address public safety emergencies without seeking local approval.   Taking Command of the D.C. Police Force   The District of Columbia Home Rule Act authorizes the president to use the local Metropolitan Police Department for “federal p...
